In March 2011, Jemma Swales (Psychology BSc, Postgrad Certificate in autism) realised her aspiration to further help young people and adults with autism by setting up ’Jemma Swales Autism Services‘ as an independent autism practitioner in Cumbria. By early 2013, having worked with many individuals and families in the local area, Jemma realised that the need for services of this type was greater than one person working alone could provide. She started discussing ideas with a small group of parents of young people on the autistic spectrum. Initially they decided to run a series of holiday activities for young autistic people in the area starting in the summer of 2013.
These were a success and the group decided that it was time to set up a unique and proactive team. ‘Autus’ was born!
Holiday activities have run every summer, Christmas and Easter holiday since then and the range of activities being run is steadily expanding.
